CHARACTER: Clara Dudley AGE RANGE: 50-60 OCCUPATION: Housekeeper of Hill House
You are the housekeeper of Hill House. While you refuse to stay at the house past dark, you are incredibly loyal to the property and have served it for most of your adult life. A bit of a recluse, you tend to keep to yourself and your family, and let others do what they will – but you will give them a warning about what they’re getting into.

WLWMEME: 5/9 tv characters ♡ theo crain (the haunting of hill house)
See, when I was little, I was afraid of a lot of things. I didn't have to be, though. They were all in my head. I just didn't know that yet. But when I was scared, I would imagine myself building a big wall all around me made of the strongest bricks in the whole world. And when I got scared, I would imagine myself putting another one on, one after the other until that wall was so thick and so strong. I knew I'd be safe in there forever. And that's what you do too, right? It's okay. It's good. 'Cause kids like us have been through more than other kids. We're tougher than other kids. We're great builders. We make ourselves really safe. And no one ever gets in.

do u have any horror recs for other mediums? tv, podcasts, books, youtube shorts, etc
I'm really gonna show my ass in this regard because most of my recommendations are going to be TV shows or short stories because I haven't branched out much beyond that if I'm honest.
I love The Haunting of Hill House (Nell Crain is my favourite horror character full stop) and The Fall of the House of Usher from Mike Flanagan (most of his shows are incredible but these two are my favourite).
THOHH: Flashing between past and present, a fractured family confronts haunting memories of their old home and the terrifying events that drove them from it.
TFOTHOU: To secure their fortune (and future) two ruthless siblings build a family dynasty that begins to crumble when their heirs mysteriously die, one by one.
The Exorcist (2016) was great!
The Exorcist follows two very different priests tackling one family's case of horrifying demonic possession. Father Tomas Ortega is the new face of the Catholic Church: progressive, ambitious and compassionate. He runs a small, but loyal, parish in the suburbs of Chicago. Father Marcus Keane is an orphan raised since childhood by the Vatican to wage war against its enemies. He is everything Father Tomas is not: relentless, abrasive and utterly consumed by his mission.
I really liked American Horror Story: Asylum, can't say the same for the other seasons.
AHS: Asylum takes place in 1964 and follows the stories of the staff and inmates who occupy the fictional mental institution Briarcliff Manor, and intercuts with events in the past and present.
I also liked a few South Korean shows I saw on Netflix.
Kingdom (2019): While strange rumors about their ill King grip a kingdom, the crown prince becomes their only hope against a mysterious plague overtaking the land.
All of Us Are Dead (2022): A high school becomes ground zero for a zombie virus outbreak. Trapped students must fight their way out or turn into one of the rabid infected.
Hellbound (2021): People hear predictions on when they will die. When that time comes, a death angel appears in front of them and kills them.
I loved Interview with a Vampire (especially because it does everything the movie didn't, which is why I didn't like the movie). it's very gay, it plays heavily into the themes of vampirism and sexuality, and I love Sam Reid and Jacob Anderson as Lestat and Louis.
In terms of other media, I really like the Dead Meat channel (if I haven't said it enough already), I also like the Scream Dreams Podcast with Catherine Corcoran (from Terrifier), James A. Janisse (from Dead Meat) and Barbara Crampton (prolific and stunning horror actor).
I know it's a little over done now, but that original series of 'The Backrooms' by KanePixels was great.
Some other horror channels/channels that explore horror as well as other topics are SpookyRice, MistaGG, Wendigoon, ElvisTheAlien, BionicPIG, Trin Lovell, KennieJD, MertKayKay, and AmandaTheJedi.
With books, I'm such a basic bitch, so I've really only read Stephen King's horror books. I'm not sure of this is horror or just very bleak and depressing but I'm Thinking of Ending Things was an incredible reading experience. And at this point it goes without saying House of Leaves is so fucking mindblowing!
H.P. Lovecraft and Edgar Allan Poe were terrible people, but their short stories are truly so dark and well-written, the cosmic horror Lovecraft is known translates best in his writing. Ambrose Bierce is the father of psychological horror as we know it, his short stories are great. My favourite short horror story is The Yellow Wallpaper. If you are interested in an audio version of it, listen to Chelsea from the Dead Meat channel with headphones (headphones are vital to that experience).
That's all I can think of off the top of my head for now! I'm sure others will give their own recommendations.

CHARACTER: Horace Dudley AGE RANGE: 50-60 OCCUPATION: Caretaker of Hill House
You are the caretaker of Hill House along with your wife, Clara. You both live on the property, though not in the house proper. Despite your many years of service, you are not shy about your dislike and distrust, even sometimes veering into hatred for the house. You are fiercely protective of your daughter, Abigail, going so far as to shield her from the world almost entirely.

I also love haunted houses. What are your favorite stories about them?
Oh my god I have to physically restrain myself from just going on an entire tirade that I started typing up, but I'll leave you with a list of my absolute FAVORITES of all time so far:
For books, I cannot recommend House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski and The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson enough!! HoL is damn near perfect in every sense of the word, and tHoHH is what inspired me to get into more stories about horror and especially eldritch horror! HoL literally blew my mind the first time I read it and left me hooked that I couldn't put the book down, it's so good!!
For games, Anatomy by Kitty Horrorshow checks every box for my horror-loving heart! Fantastic writing, an unsettling tone and haunting narrative set with stylized graphics meant less to scare you and instead make you feel unease, I could go on and on!! My god some days I'll even pull up the monolog on youtube to listen to becuase it's That Damn Good!! Please PLEASE play this game if you're able, but if you can't I BEG you to watch a playthrough of it at the least!!
For a TV show, The Haunting of Hill House directed by Mike Flanagan is a damn nearly perfect story about grief and loss and love and hope, and saying I feel in love with this show after my first watch would be a MASSIVE understatement. In particular, episode six, Two Storms, is probably my favorite written episode I've watched for any TV show EVER; I could literally go for HOURS just about that one episode alone and how damn perfect every shot and spoken line and interactions between the characters are! But, in the sake of keeping this short, all I'll say for now is PLEASE watch this show! I've re-watched it so many times and it never stops amazing me, that's how good it is!
And finally for my all time Favorite horror movie, my obvious pick is going to be Skinamarink. I cannot put into proper words about just how deeply unsettling this movie was and how it reduced me to tears from both fear and dread alone. It legitimately scared me so bad I had to sleep with the lights on for a week afterwards. I don't know another movie that was both horrifying and heartbreaking as this one was, and I truly don't know how to describe it without feeling like I'm massively understating just how good this film is. I cant even bring myself to watch it more than twice just because it makes me feel so sick to my stomach, but in a good way! I also understand that this movie may not affect everyone like that as it did for me, but I ask that you give it a chance at least.
These are just a handful of my favorites of course, but again trying to keep this (relatively) short, or else I would be here all day rambling lol

finished reading we have always lived in the castle and that alongside the haunting of hill house makes it two novels by shirley jackson that i've read. something that really caught my attention in both novels is how the main characters seem to be way younger than their stated age. i don't mean this in a derogatory "they're too immature" way, i mean in their actual mannerisms. both eleanor and merricat have a sort of whimsicality to them that you only ever see in children or teenagers. in thohh eleanor vance is 32-year-old woman, but when you read her scenes with theodora you can be easily convinced that both characters are teenage girls having a good time. in whalitc we have merricat who is an 18-year-old girl who could very easily be a pre-teen from the way she expresses herself, the way she sees the world and the way she's always restricted from things that only children are restricted.
i find that interesting because so many authors choose to make their characters sound way too wise beyond their years, specially if the characters are traumatized. but jackson takes a different route; her characters are traumatized but that trauma hinders their levels of maturity and they can't keep up with their peers mentally.

trailer here.
Tumblr media
why is he in prison? like, the sparrow academy Ben is all successful and alive. the umbrella academy Ben was dead. so what the hell happened here?
Tumblr media
he. ❤️
Tumblr media
why is Klaus upside down and in distress again? unironically, Klaus needs a break from his traumatic adventures.
Tumblr media
Five is so mature and pretty. Shipping him and Klaus still. Also, Diego and Ben are so happy to be back together again. 💓 Also!! Why is Klaus wearing gloves? Covid in this universe? But no mask and it makes no sense. Reminds me of Theodora from THOHH.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The front seat is his as always, and he's so done with his "siblings" (as always).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
What the HELL is going on here? Is that Lila? Don't tell me it's the subway timeline and Lila is gonna weep bc at some point it will seem like Diago has been killed.
Tumblr media
Hey, I have strong flashbacks to the first season. Surely not another timeline where the world has died? Also, Five and Lila getting out of a subway, and in Russian Doll Nadia was also travelling through timelines on a subway. And in here Five and Lila seem to be connected the same way they were in the past—time travel. Both of them. (oh, and I'm so happy her "mom" is gone. That was such an annoying villain.)
Tumblr media
again, the subway.
Tumblr media
I'm glad to see Grace in this timeline, though she looks too glamorous and kind of evil.
Tumblr media
these two. ❤️
Tumblr media Tumblr media
so it's purple and white now. hmmm.
Tumblr media
the timeline is definitely wrong.
Tumblr media
is that Lila? or?
Also, you can clearly tell who my favourite character(s) is(are).

Nell THoHH
How I feel about this character: There is so much wrong with her (affectionate)
All the people I ship romantically with this character: Theo. They can make each other better AND worse! Also maybe Hill House, not gonna lie. Can you fuck a sentient house? She will find out perhaps. (That too would be sapphic, to be clear.)
My non-romantic OTP for this character: Don't have one
My unpopular opinion about this character: I think Nell's Disney Princess-ness is often underexplored. She's so innocent in many ways and all her dreams for her life are very fairytale. She's a heroine in an Andrew Lang book who accidentally ended up as psychic victim of family abuse in the 1950s, and I'd like to see people delve into that more.
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: Just like the previous ask, Make The Gay Canon, please!
